Food Technology

At Voyage Learning Campus, Food Technology provides students with opportunities to develop practical cooking skills, nutritional knowledge and the confidence needed to prepare healthy, economical meals independently.

The curriculum is designed to equip students with valuable life skills whilst encouraging creativity, independence and an understanding of healthy eating. Through practical cooking experiences, students learn how to prepare a range of dishes safely and confidently, whilst developing knowledge that can be applied both at home and in future education or employment.

Food Technology plays an important role in preparing students for adult life by helping them make informed choices about food, nutrition, budgeting and meal planning.

What Students Learn

Students develop their knowledge and skills through practical cooking activities and classroom-based learning. They learn how to:

  • prepare and cook a variety of nutritious meals from scratch;
  • work safely and hygienically in a kitchen environment;
  • understand food safety and hygiene principles;
  • plan balanced meals and make healthy food choices;
  • budget and economise when planning and preparing meals;
  • develop a range of cooking skills and techniques;
  • follow recipes and instructions accurately;
  • understand ingredients, nutrition and healthy eating;
  • explore foods, recipes and cuisines from different cultures and traditions.

Students are encouraged to apply their learning beyond the classroom by developing the confidence to cook independently and make informed decisions about food and nutrition.

Qualifications

Students work towards the Pearson Level 2 BTEC Home Cooking Skills qualification.

The course develops practical cooking skills alongside an understanding of nutrition, food safety and meal planning. Students build a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates their ability to prepare nutritious meals, apply cooking skills and understand how to plan meals economically.

Students also have opportunities to achieve additional accreditation, including Food Hygiene certification and AQA Unit Awards.

Wider Learning and Personal Development

Food Technology contributes significantly to students' wider personal development.

Through the course, students develop:

  • confidence and independence;
  • resilience and perseverance;

  • time management and organisation;
  • problem-solving and decision-making skills;
  • budgeting and financial awareness;
  • research and planning skills;
  • teamwork and cooperation;
  • employability and workplace skills.

Students learn to work safely, follow instructions, manage resources responsibly and take pride in producing high-quality outcomes.

Cultural Awareness and Diversity

Food provides an excellent opportunity for students to explore different cultures, traditions and ways of life.

Through a wide range of recipes and cuisines, students develop an appreciation of how food reflects cultural identity, beliefs and experiences. They are encouraged to explore and respect diverse traditions whilst broadening their own experiences and understanding of the world.

Careers and Future Pathways

Food Technology helps students develop transferable skills that are valuable in a wide range of future pathways.

Students gain experience in planning, organisation, communication, working to deadlines and following professional standards. They also develop an understanding of careers within the food, catering and hospitality industries.

The course provides a strong foundation for further education, vocational training and employment, whilst equipping students with practical cooking skills that support healthy and independent living throughout adult life.
