Art, Craft & Design
At Voyage Learning Campus, Art, Craft and Design provides students with opportunities to develop creativity, confidence and self-expression in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Our curriculum is designed to engage students through practical experiences, personal interests and individual strengths. We encourage students to explore ideas, experiment with a wide range of materials and techniques, and develop the confidence to communicate their thoughts, feelings and experiences through visual media.
Art plays an important role in supporting many of our students to develop resilience, independence, critical thinking and emotional wellbeing. Through creative projects, students learn that mistakes and experimentation are valuable parts of the learning process and gain confidence in sharing and celebrating their achievements.
What Students Learn
Students develop their knowledge and skills through projects that encourage creativity, exploration and personal expression. They learn how to:
-
investigate and explore the work of artists, designers and craftspeople from a range of cultures and historical periods;
-
develop and refine their own ideas through research, experimentation and feedback;
-
use a wide variety of artistic materials, processes and techniques, including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, textiles, sculpture and digital media;
-
record observations, ideas and creative developments through drawing, sketchbooks, mind maps and annotation;
-
evaluate and analyse their own work and the work of others;
-
create personal and meaningful responses that demonstrate originality, imagination and technical skill.
Students are encouraged to make links between their learning and the wider world, developing an understanding of how art reflects culture, identity, beliefs and experiences.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, students explore the formal elements of art, including line, tone, colour, shape, form, space and composition.
Projects are often based around themes such as identity and personal interests, helping students to engage with their learning whilst developing a broad range of artistic skills. Students experiment with different materials and techniques, build confidence in expressing their ideas, and begin to understand the creative process from initial concept through to a final outcome.
The curriculum is designed to provide strong foundations for further study whilst also promoting enjoyment, curiosity and creative risk-taking.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, students work towards the AQA GCSE Art, Craft and Design specification through a series of portfolio and sustained projects.
They develop their skills through investigating artists and sources of inspiration, experimenting with media and techniques, recording ideas and observations, and producing personal responses to creative briefs.
Students are supported to become increasingly independent in their decision-making and creative practice, developing a portfolio of work that demonstrates their progress, technical skills and individual interests. The course culminates in an externally set assignment during Year 11.
Wider Learning and Personal Development
Art contributes significantly to students' wider personal development.
Through their work, students develop:
-
confidence and independence;
-
resilience and perseverance;
-
problem-solving and critical thinking skills;
-
communication and presentation skills;
-
cultural understanding and appreciation of diversity;
-
emotional wellbeing through creative expression.
Where possible, students benefit from opportunities such as exhibitions, cultural visits and community projects.
Careers and Future Pathways
Students gain experience in planning projects, meeting deadlines, presenting ideas and responding to feedback. They also develop an understanding of careers within the creative industries, including art, design, photography, illustration, media, fashion and digital content creation.
The course provides a strong foundation for further education, vocational courses and portfolio-based progression routes. Students develop transferable skills including creativity, communication, problem-solving and independent working that support success across a wide range of future pathways.
